With my 96 Dakota V6, manual trans, I towed a 4000 lb, 14 ft Coleman trailer across country to Kansas. I should have had a WD hitch, my tongue weight was about 500 lbs. In KS I bought shocks with helper springs, and they helped get me home. Top speed was about 60 mph. If you do it, avoid the interstates, and take the 2-lane roads! The downhills were scary, I should have had an anti-sway. Yes, I did have an electric brake controller and proper 7-pin connection. I recommend a fiberglass "eggshell" (like Scamp), or a teardrop or a pop-up.
