Hi there, i'm new to the forum today and this is my first post. I just got a 2004 Dakota 4.7 and the ac doesnt work. i tried to recharge the system but there is a leak right at the fire wall. it i see there is a connection point under the hood but i dont know what part is behind the firewall. and advice would be great. Also how much work is it to get at to replace?
thank you all in advance
A picture would be helpful; but I THINK (from your somewhat vague description) that you're talking about the evaporator.
If so, then to replace it requires removing the dash and the HVAC box; disassembling the HVAC box (typically; you may be uberlucky and there be a hatch cover over it); reassembling the HVAC box; reinstalling it and the dash; vacuuming down the system after also replacing the expansion valve or orifice tube and the accumulator; adding back in enough oil to replace what's been lost; and then recharging.
OTOH, labor is the major portion of this, so if you don't mind buying some tools and studying up a bit, you may be able to tackle this yourself.
OTGH, before you touch ANY of it - I highly, HIGHLY recommend picking up the factory service manual (off Ebay, RockAuto, from the dealer, or straight from Bishko) and possibly as adjunct the Chilton's and/or Haynes manuals.
