RalphP Heh. That "MASSIVE" is the cat; the earlier bulges are pre-cats; they don't have quite the same matrix; and I'm not sure all versions have it (MY truck didn't, for instance.)

You can always pull codes by on/off/on/off/on inside of 5 or 10 seconds, and counting the flashes. AutoZone won't be able to read a 1988's codes in any case.

1stgodman Thanks for the reply Ralph. I got to looking at the exhaust pipes after the manifold but found that there are two small catalytic converters that are bolted directly to the manifolds and there are no pre-cat 02 sensors in sight, further down the exhaust pipe is one MASSIVE catalytic converter, that thing is over 2ft long and 9inches in diameter, I'm gonna try to get my brother to get the codes pulled soon but he doesn't wanna take it to a autozone to pull em. Hopefully I can talk him into it.

RalphP The downstreams look for a difference from the upstream; what you can do usually is put some spark plug anti-foulers between the exhaust pipe and the O2 sensor, and that'll delay the transitions making it "different" enough for most cars.

They don't normally mess with the air/fuel (the downstreams); that's the job of the UPSTREAM (between the cat and the motor).

Clogged catalytic converter question

My brother owns a 2008 3.7L dakota. It has a few probmes but the one I'm wanting to adress is the clogged cat. I'm wondering if we can just beat the thing out or cut it off. I checked cat cat and after the cat about half a year ago for 02 sensors which may lay after or in the cat which, as you know, will mess with air to fuel ratio and cause a bunch of problems but I cannot remmember if I found any. I haven't had a chance to look it over again for a long time.

Aside from it obviously being illegal can this be done without disturbing 02 sensors?
