Default 1969 Firebird Pro Touring Build

In 1989, I rescued a 1969 Pontiac Firebird (with clear title) from an unhappy marriage to a Cadillac engine for a mere $100. It was towed to my Mom's house and parked in her garage where it has been ever since patiently waiting to be transformed.

In November 2011, an old friend offered to help me get my project in motion. From then until now, I've been looking around for parts to get started. Today, I pulled the trigger on some key parts to get things started. My plan is to make it a pro touring car similar to the ones pictured below.

Parts on order:
New complete dash panel
New floor pans (both)

Purchased from a part out of a 69 Camaro project:
10-bolt 4.10 Posi rear end
Detroit Speed mini tub kit (minus tubs and upper shock crossmember)
Narrowed gas tank
Aluminum radiator (with efan and trans cooler mounted)
Interior carpet (new/black)

We plan to get started next month on the dash, floor pans, and rear suspension. I plan to take lots of pics and post updates as things progress.

I'm anxious to get started.

Current:

I hope mine will look sort of like these (yes, two are Camaros), but with my own twist. I do plan to use the Trans Am hood, spolier, and air extractors. Mine will definitely have an authentic NA Pontiac powerplant and likely be mated to a 700-R4 transmission. I haven't decided on a color for certain, but I'm leaning towards either a dark sapphire metallic blue or brilliant black. It will probably not have much chrome on the body and likely T/A stripes (but no T/A logos).

Sounds like a fun project. I love Pontiacs. Was very sad when they stopped making them.

Default Update

I have some parts! They're not installed yet but I thought I'd share a few pics. I've also got a line on a freshly restored subframe at a price I'm willing to pay. It will be upgraded to accomodate big tires to match the rears.

New dash

4.10 Posi Rear end

Floor pans

Mini tub kit (its boxed but here are the contents and a Camaro with it installed)

Update: The subframe was sold before I could get to it.

After some unforseen delays, the Bird is being loaded onto the roll-back as I type. Stay tuned...

Smile Update

Mitchell and I spent about 8 hours working on the Bird today. We removed the old floor pans, fitted the new pans, removed the remaining remnants of the old dash, and fitted the new dash. Next, we'll prepare all these surfaces for spot welding followed by some sandblasting and wire wheel before putting some seam sealer and primer on the inside. We hope to tackle the wheel tubs and trunk next month. Stay tuned.
