Undercoating question

Hello everyone,
I have an '04 quad cab, low miles, good overall condition. The frame has surface rust, nothing severe, just what you'd expect in a 13 year old truck in the northeast. My question is - Is it smart to undercoat a frame of this age with surface rust on it? Does it help, or does it just "seal in" old rust and allow it to rot underneath the undercoat? Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
the duck

Unless the undercoating has a rust inhibitor present, the steel will continue to rust.

If it were me, I'd buy a product like POR-15 which is designed to encapsulate old rust and prevent the formation of new rust. Another option is spraying oil on the frame. You can use any oil and theres another product called Fluid Film thats made for this purpose. Oils are messy, and requires constant upkeep, but oiled steel doesn't rust.
