Default 4wd issues..shifting by itself

My 01 Dakota is having some issues with 4wd. It's an Awd with 4hi and 4lo. Whenever it's cold, my truck will shift itself from awd to 4hi every morning. After about 15 min of driving the light indicator switches back into awd. My knob is always in the awd position the entire time. Has anyone else ever seen this? Please help!

There are plenty of members on this web site, but you will usually only receive a response or suggestion if someone has something useful to offer to help you in your situation. My Dakota is a 2WD so I have never experienced what you are seeing. And I suspect that there are not too many AWD Dakotas out there.
Are you sure it's acutally shifting to 4HI, or is just the light going from AWD to 4HI? My understanding is that the only difference is that the differential gears in the transfer case are locked when in 4HI, and unlocked in AWD to allow different speeds to the front and rear driveshafts, as necessary. It's possible the TCCM has an electronic glitch that illuminates the wrong light at times.

Thanks for replying. I'm sure its actually shifting into 4hi b/c I can feel the difference, especially it gets hard to turn and my tires will start skipping/hopping on the pavement. It's really weird that it does it every morning. It's more annoying than anything. But it always goes back to awd after 20 min. idk. I've taken it to 2 different shops, they can't figure it out either. I was just hoping someone on this site had a similar experience so I could get some advice.
