Let me see if I understand properly.

You purchased or pulled or had rebuilt a 42RE transmission for your 1997 Dakota.

You've put it in.

When you put it in drive, it stays in neutral, but if you hand shift, it works OK.

If that's accurate, my next question is, what does it do in R?

(My first guess, without knowing that, is that the gear selector is off and it's not putting the TRANSMISSION in drive when the INDICATOR is in drive ... )

Please correct me if I'm wrong on the symptoms.

Park works good, reverse works good, neutral is in the right spot, drive only works after its already moving, i.e. after hand shifting

Was this a freshly rebuilt unit, one from a boneyard, or did it just start this on the one that's been in your truck?

I had the same prob with my 1997 4x4 rebuild kits are cheap $200 and youtube is great for help to do the job yourself and save a ton of bank but from what im reading here your issue doesn't sound like clutches, are you sure you dont have a bad mlps (manual lever position sensor) they do fail and would cause the same issue you are dealing with. i didn't read that your trans is slipping and slipping is a good indication that you have bad clutches. how did you come up with your diagnosis?
