Default '01 4.7 with big problems!!!

I have a '01 with almost 200k on the odometer. About the only thing I've ever had to do is replace the clutch three times. It sounded to me earlier this week that the throw out bearing was getting ready to go. Took it to the mechanic and he said this:

First and Second syncros are shot.

Rear end is need of replacement. Possibly the U Joints too.

Front end is very noisy apparently and probably needs to be replaced.

Front drive shaft is shot and clicks really loudly when engaged.

So this just became a project vehicle.

I really like the vehicle and I way sentimental it. It been with me through a really bad marriage and a divorce and I just cant see myself EVER not having it.

What I'd like to ask is what should I look at doing? From what I understand the engine pretty tough, made by Mercedes. Right off the bat I'm looking for power upgrades. And suspension and drive line parts that you all recommend.

Some goals:

More than 300 HP, more like 400 if possible. How could I do that?

Tranny rebuild and upgrades, like a Hurst shifter.

Front and Rear Diff options.

Drive line upgrades.

I have a friend with a lift in a great big barn, so I'll be doing all the work my self as much as possible.

Exhaust upgrades.

Any thoughts and suggestions are welcome!

200k on the odo isn't great, but it isn't considered completely worn out either, unless you've seriously worked your truck or it was abused. Many modern vehicles will go beyond 300K if well maintained. So my suggestion is, get another opinion.

Assuming that your Dakota is in the shape quoted by your mechanic, you might want to consider all your options carefully. It sounds like every major component is in need of work. To overhaul or replace each major component can cost over a thousand dollars, each! Is this Dakota really worth it? There also the condition of the things you didn't mention. Is the body rusty? Is the frame in good shape? Hows the interior? It makes no sense to dump a few grand into a rust bucket or basket case. If this is the case, you may want to consider unloading it, or junking it.

Now on the other hand. You can rebuild almost anything. But there will be a price to pay. In the grand scheme of things, it's now cheaper to completely overhaul and rebuild a worn out or well used truck to like new condition, than it is to buy a brand new truck off the show room floor. The thing about rebuilding a vehicle is that it's a very long process and many projects die for lack of money, time or interest. But if you can stick it out, pay it off much like a new car payment and remain determined, you can have something special and unique.

Rebuilding a vehicle opens up all the possibilities imaginable. In this, the sky is the limit. If you want 300 or 400 hp, you can consider using just about any engine. Want a stroker 360 Magnum, Hemi or a Cummins turbo diesel? Now is the best opportunity to install one. Front and rear axle options? You don't have to use the stock axles. You can actually consider big half tons like a Dana 44, 9.25 rear, or go larger, such as Dana 60s front and rear. Lift? Big tires? Not an issue with a solid axle swap.
