So I put (2) quarts of lucas tranny fix in and the problem is nearly gone. It is so much improved I can take a drive and forget it is even there.

Does this indicate what the problem might be?

No...we had to remove 2 quart from it. Actually, checking the bottle, we removed 48 oz and put 48 oz in.

that stuff will not help for long... notice how thick it is? I tried it once and it was so thick I could not "chase" it thru my transmission funnel with ATF. I got maybe 4-6 oz. into the trans at most, and dumped the rest. Within 10 miles my trans was TOAST. it was so thick and gooey my guess is that it plugged the filter and starved the trans. I had saved that trans as a future spare and was going to pull it apart to see just what went bad and my storage got broken into, it was stolen....

This was on a 97 Ram 1500 that I plowed with, trans was working fine but as I said I plowed with it so I went to change fluid "just because".... maintenance. because it was quite dark. the bottle of Lucas claimed that it would replenish depleted additives and knowing that there was no way to completely change out the fluid with just a "pan drop" I figured that I was "doing the rest of the fluid a favor" by replenishing the additives in the rest of the fluid that remained..... BIG MISTAKE!!!!!

just pull it and either rebuild it or take it in, and set it on the bench at a trans shop.... I am 110% SURE that you can get a good quality rebuild for much less than you think.... and then you won't have to worry about it no more. just make damn sure to flush the cooler within the radiator AND also add on an aux cooler too.

Default Hi

1993 4 speed automatic.

Identical situation, got my truck for free because of the shifting problems, the guy added tranny fix and got some more mileage. I did a tranny flush and adjusted the bands in there, put it back together and was all good.

You might get lucky like me, and you can do it on your back in your driveway.

I think I still have the band adjusting specs if you like.

to add food for your thought I am about top swap trannys on a 92 with 202K miles on it as the 4th gear is starting to flake out more and more all the time, I have a fresh rebuild sitting here collecting dust just for that truck, have had for nearly a year now.... it got goofy on me towards the end of last winter but it warmed up outside and worked great.... last week we had high 50s and low 60s and it was still flaking out, so it's time. I have been pretty hard on that tranny this past summer, actually kinda trying to
"help" the cause of it going out.....

and Scoughty... that liquid tranny fix was a mistake, I hate to say....
