Default 2002 Dakota Front Axle Replacement

This is my father's rig. The truck recently developed a noise while in four wheel drive. The noise seems to be coming from drivers side front. It does not happen in 2x4. We put the truck in the air on 4 jack stands an ran it through a variety of functional tests while running in gear but were unable to replicate the noise with all tension off the suspension. We decided that a constant velocity joint was a likely culprit so we purchased a new complete axle unit. We also watched a few you tube videos and consulted the service manual(which is vague at best). We got real close to compressing the inner cv joint enough to clear the output shaft on the differential but not close enough to get her free. We decided to go back to the drawing board and get more info.
Looking for tips or tricks or resources to gain more insight. Any help would be appreciated. Videos make it appear possible to pull the axle without popping the steering knuckle loose. That would be great. Thanks for any help. Good to know you're out there!

If you're still messing with this, you can't compress the axle shaft to remove it. You have to first remove the hub/bearing assembly, once it's out of the way, you feed the axle shaft thru the knuckle
