Default 2nd Dodge , 1st Dakota

Hello Dakota owners, thanks for the welcome. Bought this Red 2005 4wd crew
cab with 4.7 and automatic a month ago. I bought my first Dodge pickup in 2000. It was a shortbed 6 cylinder automatic, the transmission died at 50,000
miles. i hope that was a fluke. I am retired, I was a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and Crane Operator in San Diego untill 2008. This 05 Dakota with 150 k miles runs well and looks pretty nice for 13 years old. I have been enjoying doing some work on it since I got it. (bumpers, bed rail caps, drivers seat upholstery, some oil leaks and spark plugs etc. I am familiar with the concept of a forum, having joined the Corvette and Ford Truck forums, and am eager to learn from you folks about the ins and outs of these Dakotas. Thank you ! John

Cool Welcome

Welcome aboard!! I also have a quad cab 4.7 Dakota. mine is an 05. it is my second experience with this generation Dakota having totaled an 06 in 2014 that we purchased new.

I would tell you that in my experience, the trannys are problematic. I have a chronic hard shift issue with this one and it only has 70,000 miles on it. Already spent about $700 to solve the problem but it persists. The first one I had also had transmission issues (slipping when cold) and it only had about 70,000 miles when totaled.

Other concerns I have involve the suspension (front struts suck from the factory) and rust. They all rust extensively over the rear wheels and in the door bottoms on the rear doors if not properly cleaned.

all in all, I like my truck but I wish it had the 2008 motor (more power) or a hemi. I never understood why Chrysler refused to put the hemi in the Dakota but put it in the Durango. They share the same chassis design. I thought about swapping for one but don't know if I am up to the challenge. Mechanicals are no problem but I am not particularly electronics savvy.

Thanks to all for the welcoming. Alsrag, interesting reading your post. The transmission does seem to be Dodge's weak point, I have heard it from many sources including motor home owners. I just spent a bunch of time and money getting the front suspension renewed, including all the shock/struts and lower control arms, the control arms (the triangle shaped plates )had to be cut to get the struts out because the shafts for the bottom of the struts were solid frozen in place , because Dodge saved 13 cents apiece by not putting zerk fittings in.
Yes. my back doors have rust at the bottom. About the HEMI idea, I wonder how hard
that would be to do. Are the motor mounts and bell housing the same?
Thanks for the information, Im sure we will be conversing more in the future. John

I do believe the tranny bell housing is the same for the hemi as for the 4.7. Mounts are different I think. Computer and wiring harness is the $64 question. Will one from a ram 1500 or a Durango work? I cannot seem to find a post anywhere that addresses hemifying an 05 or later Dakota. There are several about putting one into an earlier model. I would hate to be the beta, at least on a low mileage truck like mine. If I had a beater, then maybe. It sure would bring one to life, though.
