In need of 92 Dakota manual rack and pinion or rebuild kit
I am working with my friend to repair her 92 Dakota that has a manual rack and pinion that is failing. It is getting real hard to steer and too much play. We've tried to locate a replacement from the local wrecking yards but every single one we've located are power steering units.
Apparently manual steering were made in smaller quantities compared to the power units. Does anyone know a source for these or a rebuild kit that we could use to restore it?
She really loves her Dakota and relies on it for her daily routines and work.
Finally at the last wrecking yard I went to, a mechanic there suggested she simply adapt the power steering rack and pinion and use it like that and cap off the hydraulics. While it seems feasible, wouldn't that be like trying to steer a car whose power steering pump failed?
Thanks for any advice and feedback,
They don't say if it's for manual or power steering, but here's the rack rebuild kits at RockAuto:
As to using a power steering rack without the hydraulics, yes, it would be like driving a power steering vehicle with the pump failed. But. If the manual is the same ratio, it's that way ANYWAY. Inner tie rods are different manual to power, so keep that in mind.
One more thing - you can call Cardone and see if they'll do the manual rack.
Here's a list for the R&R (Rebuild and Return) program:
