Superchips 3865 is what most of us use. It will definitely give it more get up and go with the change in shift points. It's not going to save you and fuel mileage though, even with their Fuel mileage saver tune, it just doesn't work. You can find a used 3865 on the forums or Ebay for around $200. There is a newer updated version of the 3865 out now, the Superchips 3842 or 3841 (One is the California version), it does the same exact thing though.

I feel that I have no idea how these things work lol does it read what your truck is putting out then you can adjust it from there or you send the specs to do tuning company and they send it back with different specifications?

The Superchips 3865 programmer has 'canned' tunes, which mean they are standard engine & trans adjustments loaded into the vehicles computer.
  • You get the programmer, update it online at Superchips website, and hook it up to your truck via the OBDII port on your lower dashboard.
  • The programmer backs up your trucks stock information onto the programmer, so it can be returned back to stock later on.
  • You then choose one of the canned tunes and load it to your truck.
  • You can also adjust tire sizes, speed governor and more in other menus on the programmer.

Read up these FAQs on Superchips Website.

There are other programmers (SCT being one)which work better, but only in conjunction with some engine modifications.

I'm not familiar with that programmer, but they all usually work the same.
  1. Buy the programmer.
  2. You usually have to update the programmer at home online, this is to get the latest update available for the loaded tunes on the programmer. You will have to read the directions, but it should be simple enough.
  3. You will then plug the programmer, via the supplied cable, into your OBDII port on your truck, which is located on the lower left side of the dash.
  4. The programmer will then store your stock PCM information on the device, and then load the chosen tune into your PCM. This will be a process of turning the key to the on and off position a few times, the programmer will guide you along during the whole process.
  5. The loaded tune will be complete, and you then disconnect the programmer from your truck.
  6. You're done.

Some other basic information for you.
  • Your programmer will be locked (or married) to your truck one you use it. It can only be locked to ONE vehicle at a time.
  • You have to reload your stock information via the programmer when getting service done to your truck. If your PCM is flashed by a mechanic/dealer, your programmer will be locked to your vehicle and will need to be unlocked for you to use it again. There is a cost ($$$) to do that.
  • You have to reload your stock information via the programmer to sell it, you would need to disclose that you are selling a locked programmer so the next owner knows about the extra cost unlock and to use it.
