I don't have a difinitive answer for you but I believe that it is possible. Personally I have the 545 rfe 4x4 transmission from a Jeep Grand Cherokee that I am using in a HEMI swap into my 2wd Dakota. I have seen video on YouTube where the 4x4 guys swap a 2wd transmission and change it into 4wd by removing the tail shaft housing and bolting it up to their transfer case, so essentially you will be doing the exact opposite. Also Chris at Hotwire has assured me that I can do this with my 545.

If you do do the swap and are successful post your results for others in the future.

Good luck,

Heres another tip. Do a YouTube search for "Transfer case swap for beginners" from a user named D&E in the garage
This should help you out a lot.
