I have 6cyl 96 dakota sport.
It's been running rough and backfires.
Whale truck is running I pulled plug wires 1 at à time.
Cylinders 1&4 did nothing to engine idle.so I guess those 2 Cylinders are dead?dealer? Causes à dead Cylinder.

How long since the last tune up?

How's the cap and rotor?

What shape are the wires in?

I'd also NOID the injector plugs to see if all the injectors are being fired.

Peek into the intake (with the motor OFF, take off the top hat off the throttle body; then peek inside, maybe with a flashlight, and open the throttle all the way with the motor OFF) and see how dirty and oily the intake is. If it's oily, you may just have a bad plenum gasket that's failed in two areas.

Last thing is, since it's a 1996, it's OBDII - you can pick up an OBDII Bluetooth adapter (the generic name is an ELM327 Adapter) and pair it with a Bluetooth scanner program such as Torque (available as a free program or with more features for something like $4.95 - yep, under 5 dollars) and see what your engine thinks is happening.

It may flag something as wrong that's not, because something else is causing a problem ... but at least it'll tell you what it's thinking.
