I just discovered the ABS is not activating on my 2002 Dakota Sport. The warning light isn't lit, but the system isn't operating. Brakes seem to be operating normally otherwise. Any advice on what to check here?

Do you have RWAL (rear wheel anti-lock) - standard equipment - or full ABS - optional equipment? If you have RWAL, how did you determine it's not operating? RWAL is designed to prevent rear wheel (only) lockup during hard braking. It will not keep the front wheels from locking up. The system monitors how quickly the rear wheels are decelerating (using the speed sensor on the rear axle) and if it 'thinks' they're close to lockup, will modulate the pressure in the rear brakes to attempt to prevent lockup.

Wow - good information. Not wanting to cut in on the barbarian's question, but I have a '03 Dak - how do you know if you have full ABS or RWAL?:confused:

The CAB (Controller Antilock Brake) and HCU (Hydraulic Control Unit) for both systems are mounted on the drivers side just forward of the firewall. If you see a unit with five brake lines mounted all together in a cluster (two from the master cylinder), that is a full ABS system. If you see only two lines going to it, one from the master cylinder and one going down and eventually to the rear wheel brakes, it is an RWAL system.
