Does a wind shield visor help to keep the truck cooler?

I am taking a 4x4 V8 to a Caribbean island.

I am thinking of adding one of those old school visors above the wind shield hoping to reduce the sunlight heating up the driver and the passenger.

Do these things help with that or are they just gimmicks?

No, they won't reduce heat. The sun can enter the cab from countless angles that the visor won't cover. Your best bet to keep the driver and passenger cool, is an A/C system that's in tip-top condition. If you want to keep the cab as cool as possible when parked, get one of those windshield sun shades you stick up in the windshield and buy a set of window visors like these:

and keep the windows cracked.
