Looking to lowering my 99 r/T 5.9 2/3 inch any suggestions for best place to purchase kits? Also I see kits but no coils should these be 2 inches shorter than the original coil spring ? Any feedback would be helpful.
Thanks for your help nice truck! The R/T's were 1" lower than a standard Dakota. So a 2" lowering spring for a non-R/T would net you a 1" drop on a R/T. You would need to find someone making R/T springs (taking into consideration the 1" lower from standard) or use springs for a non-R/T understanding the difference.
In my opinion, a two inch drop on top of a R/T 1" drop or a three inch drop on a standard Dakota is too much. the front suspension doesn't have a lot of room for compression, you will be sitting on the bump stops. You can remove the bump stops, then what?
At one time there were drop lower control arms but the geometry was a mess causing crazy angles of the components in the suspension. This had to lead to terrible handling and bump-steer issues. I seen many deny there were problems but I also seen where many eventually removed the arms. There never were any drop knuckles because of the lower ball joint placement. On a 15" rim there was barely clearance between the ball joint and the rim, on a 17" rim there was 1-1/2" approx. not enough room to do a 2" drop.
The rear can be done with blocks or a hanger/mounts. Blocks are cheap, easy to install, but aluminum versions can crack. The rear frame rails can get very close to the axle tube if you go too low in the rear. You can get away with 3" total in the rear, going for 4" you are likely looking at a C-notch of the frame rails.
My non-R/T, I went with 2" front springs, rear hangers and custom rear leaf springs. View attachment 4392
