So I recently received a 1997 Dodge Dakota Sport with only 68k miles from my great grandfather. The trucks runs good, but I noticed a squeaking noise coming from the engine and found that the pulley connected to the AC compressor wasn't spinning and the belt was just moving over it.. It will spin for two seconds and than stop.

What could be causing this?

Wow, quiet a gift!! I thought 03 at 74,000 miles was low. Good question. First thing I would check is the belt tension and/or condition. Sounds like the belt may be too loose or could be worn out. With the AC turned off, the pully should spin freely, or with little resistance to rotation. If this isn't happening you probably have a compressor problem. Good luck.
