I purchased a 242 transfer case out if a 2000 Durango. I am planning to install it in my 2003 Dakota, replacing the electric 231 (233) but first since we purchased a new summer home, weighing in at 5500 pounds I am going to regear the Dakota the 3.55 gears are too "high" to effectively and efficiently to pull the trailer. After a little research I am going with 4.56 gears.

I will post up when I start the gear swap. I freshened up the 242 case with new seals and a chain. I wish it was more like the Jeep case with 2 WD option but having AWD with the light rear end will be good in the rain and snow

the following are photos of the initial tear down, take care not to damage the oil pump, and inspect the rubber hose connecting the tube with the pick up. the chain from this 242 is the 1.25 inch chain. The OEM chain was stretched a little. the new chain made the reassemble a little harder since it pulled the two shafts closer together, the case needed to be wiggled on.....
