I am thinking about putting a single turbo in my 2001 dakota 3.9L v6, but I'm not entirely sure whether everything in it is strong enough to withstand the turbo. I want a significant amount of more power, and there are no super chargers that I can find find for it

I'm sure the tranny and the engine are strong enough to withstand the boost in power if they are in good shape. How much boost are you interested in though? I get the feeling you want more than 5 or 6 psi of boost.

Be careful. the A500 transmissions don't stand up too well. if that's the tranny you have I would look into a different tranny before you do a turbo

Well Blackhawk, the Mopar turbo cars and vans from the 80's and 90's from the factory had 5 or 6 psi of boost and they ran well. Some people turned it up to about 12 psi and really got the performance up there so if it were me I'd run about 8 psi so there wouldn't be excessive wear on the engine and trans, that should give you around 100 more hp, give or take. 275 hp for a medium size truck is nothing to sneeze at.

hey im looking into swapping my engine or staying with the same with a prerunner set up. can you msg me with what you go with. a turbo sure would be nice.

what size turbo? internal or external wg? remote mount or manifold? with enough timing and fuel mapping you can get up to 8 lbs safely and reliably. you will have to upgrade your fuel system though. id even through an external tranny cooler to keep temps down. ive turbo'd a few things in my day.

well 8lbs reliably.....id try to do a manifold mount just for the fact of having to have an oil pump to feed the turbo. you can do a smaller t3/t4 hybrid upfront with a small bar and plate fmic, turbo xs bov (im a fan of TiAl though). Fuel system....thats gonna be a toughy, a larger fuel pump, larger injectors, and some sort of piggy back to control fuel and maybe timing (depending on whether a obd1 or obd2). there is soo much. look it up, how manufacturers turbo their cars and learn from it. read forums on like apexi safc, megasquirt, etc...

3.9l performance mods?

Hello, My name is Cade and i have 1999 3.9l SLT Dakota, and I have a cai, 180 degree thermostat, and a freeflowing exhaust, and the next mod i would like to do is a single turbo! i would like to know what all i would need to have a reliable turbo! P.S.- im 16 and this is my daily driver :)

Overall, it's better to have a spare engine that can be rebuilt to the specifications you want. You'll be in this project a lot of money, but it has been done successfully, though not by many people. It would be far easier to have the engine tuned by a reputable speed shop. Plan on going over budget by unforeseen circumstances. Plan on rebuilding the engine using good, high-quality parts. Use forged pistons. Have the camshaft reground for a turbo setup, install higher flow rate injectors so you won't max them out at 5 pounds of boost on a small turbo.

Building a turbocharged engine can be done for cheap, but then you have an unreliable engine with a lot of knock-off parts. The hardest part of a build is changing an engine into something it wasn't meant to be; a naturally aspirated engine needs a complete rebuild to be an effective forced induction engine. When adding a turbo, or supercharger, to an N/A engine you'll need to essentially re-engineer it; spark plugs, volumetric efficiency (machine work to heads, camshaft, intake manifold), exhaust system, fuel system, gaskets, ECU tuning, internals (pistons, bearings).

Another vehicle as your truck will be down sometime while working on it.
$3,000-$5,000 for the parts and other labor for manufacturing.

General Parts:
Turbocharger: 500
Custom intercooler piping: 500-750
Intercooler: 200
Custom exhaust downpipe-to-turbo and turbo-back: 200-500
Oil cooler and lines: 100
Turbo oil lines: 50
Turbo cooler lines (if applicable): 50
Oil pan tapped for oil line: 50
Larger injectors: 150-200
'Colder' spark plugs: 50
MegaSquirt ECU: 300
Cooler thermostat: 15

I'm not trying to tell you not to do it, I'm just trying to let you know what you'll be in for. Many car builders are never done on the vehicle, or they take years to complete, and that's just fine. If you want to build a turbo 239, by all means. Just be aware that there are only a few people who have traveled down the path with success. A turbo 6 would be a great build to see, and there are far too few out there.
