Howdy, I am trying to install a new turn signal switch on a 1989 dakota 4X4. I have the steering wheel off but do not know how to remove the notched black metal ring that locks the steering wheel to get to the switch itself. Any tips??
I hope you have disabled the steering wheel airbag! Remove the battery
cables before proceeding any further! If the air bag is accidently triggered,
it could be more expensive than you bargained for.
That black ring is more than likely the airbag clockspring,
which has a locking mechanism to prevent it from rotating after the steering wheel
has been removed.
According to my Haynes manual; to remove the clockspring mechanism,
you need to depress the auto locking tabs (2 round ones closer to the middle),
and rotate the hub of the clockspring
clockwise until it stops. Do not apply too much force. Then turn the hub
2 and a half turns in the OTHER direction to release the locking tabs.
The manual says to reinstall the clockspring by reversing the removal procedure.
BTW..did you mark the steering wheel relationship to the steering shaft
so that it goes back on in the exact same position?
