Hi im new here, me and my dad just bought a 94 ext. cab with 160K miles with a 318 off a friends. The truck ran great but on the way home the truck died out of the blue. driving the truck before it quit, the oil pressure was in the safe mark, but wasn't as high as i liked it to be. it wouldn't restart or turn over, when we pulled over and checked fan belts to see if the motor would turn by hand but wouldn't. the starter would work but wouldn't turn motor over. The motor didn't make any noise or prior indications of motor issues. the only thing we know about it is the transfer case is bad(think the chain is wore out). Any thing you could tell us about it would be appreciated.

Thanks

Are you telling us that the truck died on the way home after you just
bought it from the seller? With that many miles on it,why didn't
you insist on a mechanical check before you bought it?

it wouldn't restart or turn over, when we pulled over and checked fan belts to see if the motor would turn by hand but wouldn't.
You can't turn a 318 over by hand...that wasn't even worth trying.
the starter would work but wouldn't turn motor over.
Ok, you got the terminolgy confused....IF the starter was cranking the
motor and the motor was rotating..it WAS turning over.
The engine wasn't catching because of fuel, ignition or some other
problem(s).

The motor didn't make any noise or prior indications of motor issues. the only thing we know about it is the transfer case is bad(think the chain is wore out).
Well it seems to me, you have bought a "pig in a poke"..
sorry for the expression, as it is not meant to be offensive to you or your vehicle..just that my impression is that the vehicle was not maintained properly by the former owner...

and you "inherited" the problem(s) through buying it without a thorough
mechanical check with a mechanic first. In other words..you must have
bought it on a.."as is..where is" agreement with the former owner.

Even if the transfer case chain is stretched and needs replacing..that
shouldn't have anything to do with the engine quitting on you.

Did you get a "check engine" indicator?..or something that would give
us a clue..right now..we have absolutely no factual information to offer
any advice to you on why the engine didn't start..there are too many
sensors and other mechanical issues (spark/ignition/fuel pump/injectors
etc etc) to even guess at where to begin. Tow it to a garage that can
is familiar with your vehicle and can run diagnostics and maybe a
compression test on all 8 cylinders.
